5th Grade

All of the following courses are included in the 5th grade full-year comprehensive program.

5th Grade Science

Science Grade Five is an intermediate course with concepts across many types of sciences, including Earth Science, Life Science, and Physical Science. Through experiences including defining problems, conducting investigations, using the scientific method, using evidence, asking questions, making predictions, making and comparing observations, making inferences, using the engineering design process, and developing models, students learn about properties of and changes in matter; atoms; mixtures; energy; forms of energy; force and motion; galaxies and the solar system; the water cycle; weather and climate; the human body organs and functions; organism structure, function, and comparison; adaptations; and ecosystems.

5th Grade Social Studies

Fifth grade students will study the development of our nation with emphasis on the people, places, and events up to approximately 1850. Students will be exposed to the historical, geographic, political, economic, and sociological events that influenced the initial inhabitation, exploration, colonization, and early national periods of American history.

5th Grade Language Arts

In Language Arts Grade Five, students will engage in a variety of topics as they explore the world of reading and writing. Students will put their skills to work as they learn all about word construction, cursive writing, spelling, context clues, vocabulary, reading comprehension, grammar, and the writing process. They will write narrative, expository, and opinion essays. In this course, students will participate in engaging lessons that include interactives, informational and literary texts, graphic organizers, videos, and various practice activities.

5th Grade Mathematics

In Math Grade 5, instructional time will emphasize five areas: (1) multiplying and dividing multi-digit whole numbers, including using a standard algorithm; (2) adding and subtracting fractions and decimals with procedural fluency, developing an understanding of multiplication and division of fractions and decimals; (3) developing an understanding of the coordinate plane and plotting pairs of numbers in the first quadrant; (4) extending geometric reasoning to include volume and (5) extending understanding of data to include the mean.

5th Grade Art

In Art Grade 5, students learn about the elements of art, principles of design, and craftmanship skills through the exploration of master artists and art techniques. At the same time, they will explore techniques like the effects of pressure, a resist, paint, mixed media, and more. Students will dive into the works of artists such as Salvador Dali, Edmonia Lewis, El Anatsui, and Frida Kahlo.  Connecting art techniques to the elements of art, principles of design, and master artists is a fundamental aspect of the course and ensures that students of all learning styles have an opportunity to succeed.
